Editorial policy
YouVisa (youvisa.com) is operated by Wang Law Firm, LLC and provides general information about U.S. immigration law. Immigration laws and policies change often, and readers frequently make important decisions based on what they read online, so we hold our content to clear standards of accuracy. This page explains how we write, review and update the content on this site.
Who writes and reviews the content
The visa guides, articles and tool descriptions published on this site are reviewed by attorney David Wang before publication. David Wang is licensed to practice law in Illinois, New York and Massachusetts, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The attorney decides whether to publish and approves the final text.
The sources we rely on
We rely on primary sources wherever possible, rather than restating what other websites or social media say:
- Statute: the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA);
- Regulations: Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations (8 CFR, immigration) and Title 20 (20 CFR, Department of Labor matters such as labor certification);
- Agency policy: the USCIS Policy Manual, the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Affairs Manual (FAM), and the monthly Visa Bulletin;
- Rules and notices: rules and notices published in the Federal Register;
- Case law: federal court decisions and precedent decisions of administrative appellate bodies.
How we handle numbers that change
Government filing fees, processing times, priority dates and similar figures are adjusted periodically or without notice. For this kind of information, we generally do not put fixed numbers in the text; instead, we explain how to look them up and link to the official pages, such as the USCIS fee schedule, the processing times page and the U.S. Department of State's Visa Bulletin. For details, see How to check immigration filing fees and processing times and How to read the Visa Bulletin.
Figures that are set expressly by statute or regulation and have been stable for years (for example, the number of years as a green card holder required for naturalization) we state directly, citing the source where possible. For policies that have changed often in recent years, we give only a general overview and remind readers to verify the latest rules before filing.
Updates and re-review
- Pages show when they were last reviewed or updated, so readers can judge whether the information may be out of date;
- When relevant laws, regulations or official policies change, we re-review the affected pages and revise them or add notes as needed;
- When we find an error, we verify and correct it as soon as possible.
Even so, the site's content may lag behind the latest changes. Before filing any application, check current official rules.
Online tools
The calculators and checklist tools on this site (for example, the tools under Immigration tools) explain on the page the rules and regulatory basis they use, as well as their limitations. Tool results are only general estimates based on the information you enter; they cannot cover every exception and are no substitute for an attorney's analysis of a specific case.
English and French versions
Some of the site's content is also available in English and French. Translated versions are checked against the Chinese original to make sure the legal meaning is the same. If you notice a difference between language versions, rely on the official sources, and please let us know.
No paid content
This site does not accept paid promotion or paid placement, and does not publish third-party sponsored content. Mentioning a government agency, program or service does not mean we have a partnership with it or endorse it.
How to report an error
If you find content on this site that is wrong, out of date or unclear, please email david@youvisa.com with the page address and the specific issue. Please do not send sensitive personal information, such as passport numbers, by email. Reporting an error does not create an attorney-client relationship.
